Jim Owen is the writer and director of Hostages, the independent British feature film starring Charlotte Ritchie, Tanya Moodie & Nick Asbury. The film premiered at Manchester Film Festival in March 2025, and has a London premiere to follow in May 2025.

Jim’s short films have screened at Sundance, where he won an Honorable Mention In Short Film-Making, at SXSW and the BFI’s London Comedy Film Festival. They have been Staff Picked by Vimeo, awarded a Silver at the 1.4 Awards, featured in Wholphin, Vice and on Short Of The Week.

His recent commercial work includes two spots for Smart Meters with Albert Einstein, a trippy commercial for Sunday World, a frantic and funny spot for Maxol, and capturing odd-ball, non-swimming sea swimmers, for Lyons Tea.

He directed six spots to launch Maltesers Buttons in the UK, he launched Greg James’ Breakfast Show for R1 with the Don’t Blow It Greg campaign, and launch Smarty Mobile with his Fistbump spot. Always be launching.

His past commercials include work for Subway, Huawei, McVities, Cheerios, The Big Issue, Denplan, Philips and Comfort. 

Jim directed the BBC3 Comedy Feed Hailmakers starring Samson Kayo, Akemnji Ndifornyen and Jason Barnett, for BBC Studios, and the BBC2 sketch shows Sketchland and What’s Funny About The Indyref? for BBC Comedy in Scotland.
